Claire Fontaine's Violence
May 2012, Columbia University, Art History honors thesis
"...Violence is indeed an element in much of Fontaine’s work, but to call it an undercurrent or undertone is to marginalize its importance. Violence is a recurring motif, and while its affective potential is certainly significant to Fontaine, it is not present solely to jolt the viewer. Rather, Fontaine détournes violence just as she expropriates artworks, reusing already present threats of harm or damage to undermine the violence of unquestioned exercises of power.”
